Syfy Channel Announces a Mini-series of Philip José Farmer’s Riverworld – Possible Series
The Syfy Channel announced more of its post-Battlestar Galactica lineup, and it includes a possible ongoing series based on Philip José Farmer’s Riverworld novels. This could be amazing, if done even half right. Dollhouse/BSG star Tahmoh Penikett and Laura Vandervoort (Smallville) have been cast in a four-hour mini-seres Riverworld, which is intended as a backdoor pilot of sorts for a possible series order (much like the original Battlestar Galactica mini-series did). Also cast in the mini-series: Alan Cumming, Jeanne Goossen, and Mark Deklin. Penikett will play Matt Ellman, a war correspondent who, along with his fiancee (Vandervoort) is killed, but they both awaken in a strange world inhabited by everyone who has ever lived on Earth.
One of the great sf epics of all time by Phillip José Farmer:
Everyone who ever lived on Earth has been upon their death, deposited on an alien world, where they wake up, naked and disoriented. The world is of course dominated by a huge river.
What happened? Who did this? What the heck is going on? A band of assorted historical characters are thrown together with the hopes of surviving in this strange new world and discovering the secrets of the Riverworld. If done correctly ala LOST, it could be a great series where we find out who these people were in life and who they become on Riverworld all while finding clues to the mysteries supported by a rabbit-hole mythology.
