Rediscovering The Wonderful PBS Film Version Of “The Lathe Of Heaven”

May 22, 2008

Just re-read Ursula K. LeGuin’s book, “The Lathe of Heaven”, so I’m in the mood to share. There are dozens of book reviews, masters and doctoral thesis about this book, so I’ll spare you that.

In 1979, WNET the New York PBS station was experimenting with film and film makers. They produced a wonderful movie version of Lathe. It starred Bruce Davison, now probably best known for his role of Sen. Kelley in the X-Men movie franchise, but is a perennial guest or reoccurring player in many TV shows.

I’m linking you up to all things The Movie Lathe. The 1980 version, forget the horrible 2002 A&E movie.

Fist of all, the movie is online! If you don’t want to watch this version buy or rent the re-mastered DVD with interviews and extra’s.

In 2000 PBS re-released Lathe. The most requested PBS’s movie vault, btw. Bill Moyers interviewed Ursula K. LeGuin about the movie, her participation in it, the book, taoism, and why there are few bad guys in her books.

I let this comment go through, even though it’s so offensive to me. Why would a person purposefully limit themselves to watch or read something based upon the author’s sexual preference? I can’t understand? It just seems to me to be kind of sad and limiting to their growth as a person, but if it’s what this person believes and they haven’t been any more offensive than that, I can’t in good conscious delete the comment. Good luck to you sir or madam and thanks for visiting my blog.

Just wanted to let you know that I was hunting all over the web and forgotten to check google video – and thank to you I’ve watched one of my favorite films of all time.

Thank you so much for linking “The Lathe of Heaven” for all of us. It’s an amazing piece of work.
